Smith's Harbour is a small fishing community located on the shores of a small harbour on the northeast side of Green
Bay, southeast of Burlington. It is an inlet nestled between rocks and trees and a beautiful small island sits at the entrance
to the harbour. This island was known in earlier years as John Smith's Island, today referred to as Smith's Island, serves
as a breakwater and shelters us from the storms. The harbour has the shape of a narrow "V", and in early records, the harbour
was known as John Smith's Harbour. Smith's Harbour was first settled in the 1800's by a John Smith. This is where the Island
and Harbour received its name. The family of Smith's was known to have lived on the island close to good fishing grounds.
These fishing grounds have different names, such as Bug-ledge, Smith's Rock, Burn Island Ground, King's Island Ground and
Piss Pot. It seems that this family of Smith's may have left again by 1850 and probably moved to Triton. Records show there
was a John Smith living in Triton in 1851.
